Hero Lab

Hero Lab LogoI have long lamented the lack of a Character Builder-like tool for Pathfinder.  D&D character creation is greatly aided by this on-line tool that combines the contents of all of the character generation content from every book and magazine WotC has published.  Until recently, there was no such alternative for Pathfinder.  Most of us scraped by with a very good spreadsheet, but suffered with the limitations of that media, especially the need to transfer the character to a blank new version any time we wanted to take advantage of an update to the character sheet.  Some of us just did the work by hand.

Recently, Mel turned me on to a PC based character generation tool called Hero Lab.  It's $50 for the tool, one game content license (Pathfinder in this case), and the content from both optional books.  Licenses for Call of Cthulhu and other games are also available, and there is a way to download the Compendium and Character Builder data into the tool so it can be used for 4th Edition as well.  I haven't tried that last process yet.

Evenmere: A Pathfinder Campaign

Posted in

Evenmere is a low level Pathfinder Campaign, named for the ancient castle in which the story begins.  The characters have just "wakened" from an extended nightmare of death and misery to find their formerly glorious home mostly abandoned, seemingly for decades at least.  The wilds outside are overgrown and there is no evidence of visitation from what should be a populated surrounding countryside.  Those alive in the castle are disoriented, with only fragmented memories of their former lives and what seems to have been an unpleasant afterlife before waking here.

What happened here and to the outside world?  These are questions left to the players to answer, assuming they can find a way to safeguard their newfound lease on life.

Wild Shape Cheat Sheet

Some hard to find rules for Polymorph and shape changing spells and abilities:

  • Your base speed changes to match that of the form you assume
  • With gained swim or burrow speed, you can breathe underwater/under-earth
  • Gain the natural attacks (and proficiency with them) of the creature using your STR/DEX for calculations.
  • Apply size modifiers to AC, Attack Bonus, CMD, Stealth, etc.
  • Unless the new form is humanoid, all gear merges into the form.  Constant bonuses (except AC) remain.  Activation items can't be activated. Material components are not accessible while merged into the form.
  • Gain reach appropriate to new form (implied... this is a size related ability, per Enlarge and other similar effects.)

Size Modifiers - All Forms (Stealth, AC and CMD):

Attack Bonus and CMB are modified by differential in size... +1 for each size step smaller, -1 for each size step larger.

Site Down... Back Up

The site was down for a few hours this morning.  Should be back up now.

EDIT: The PDF of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rules will be available 8/13 for $9.99 here. Not a bad way to go since shortages of the initial rule book have Amazon already pushing out orders.

Free Pathfinder RPG PDF Rules "purchase".

Nick's comments on the Pathfinder RPG intrigued me, so I went to take a look. The folks at Paizo make the Pathfinder Adventure modules, which are simply excellent source material for any D&D adventure. The quality in those publications is high enough that I feel compelled to check out their RPG, despite the fact that I am pretty much ready to cast 3.5 aside. Currently you can download a PDF of the rules for free, with the caveat that these are beta rules and still under development. Expect change.
