Dragon Age: Origins

I purchased the Digital Deluxe Edition of DA:O over Steam yesterday, and Mel picked up the PC Collector's Edition. They're effectively identical. I'll likely get a second copy for the PS3 eventually to play with my family. I've been waiting impatiently for this game for three years, and everything I've heard about the game play sounded like a Fantasy Mass Effect. As ME is, without a doubt, the finest CRPG I've ever played, I was VERY stoked for this title. Admittedly, the screen shots and videos did little to whet my appetite. The art style is very gritty and Shadowbane-like (in style, NOT quality), and it just lacked the flash and color of even ME. All that fell by the wayside as soon as I got into the game.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

My son got this game for his birthday and I just got a chance to watch him playing it for about an hour last night. The encounter (seemingly the first encounter) with the Scarecrow was something to behold. One of the creepiest and coolest things I've seen in a video game. The combination of excellent gameplay and great cinematics was very impressive. Combat is fast, brutal, and very much Batman in action. The facial rendering could be slightly better, and I can't imagine the conclusion living up to what I've seen so far, but this game is a must get for any console gaming fan, IMO. If you're a Batman fan, you ought to already have it.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

I used to read a column all the time called Games for Lunch.  It was written by this guy who would take a game a day and play for an hour writing up his thoughts as he played.  He moved the site a while back and I kind of lost interest in following him but I always liked the format so I thought I would try it myself for this game.  Let me know what you think.

InFamous

I have owned a PS3 for about a year now and honestly I have often regretted the purchase.  Finally though a game has come along that made it worth having.  InFamous is a superpowered sandbox type game along the lines of Crackdown.  You play as Cole, a bike messenger who gains lightning controller powers when a package he is delivering explodes in his hands.  The government locks the city down under quarantine to contain the resulting plague and presumably all the other powered people and mutants in the area.  The story is driven along by various contacts including FBI agents, shadow government agents, your pissed off Dr.

Ok fair warning, I could only get through about 2 hours of this game before I was blindingly sick of it.

Wanted: Weapons of Fate

Just finished trying out the demo for Wanted:Weapons of Fate on 360.  This is a game based on the movie Wanted from last summer; yes I mean the ridiculous, "curve the bullet," movie.  It should be mentioned that I didn't realize it was a tie in for that movie until I had already finished the demo.  It's about what you would expect from a movie tie in game.  It's a fairly basic 3rd person shooter with its own version of bullet time which not only slows down time for the other characters but also speeds up your own firing substantially.  The demo level is played on a plane that has apparently been taken over by terrorists who flunked out of the marksmen academy.  The AI seems pretty weak in that the enemies will just pop in and out of the same cover spot repeatedly until you advance far enough to ti

Valkyria Chronicles (PS3) Review

I've found my favorite console game ever and my favorite computer game in a long while. Kirsten got me a PS3 for Christmas (A separate review on that excellent piece of hardware will follow), and we got a few PS3 titles and blue-ray films to go with it. My choice was Valkyria Chronicles, which at the time had 47/48 5 star reviews on Amazon, with a lone 4 star review marring its unprecedented perfection. My experience with the game so far is that those reviews are spot on.

Wii Fit Mini-Review

I'm not sure if any of you other than Griffon and I have a Wii at this point but if anyone does I thought I would post some thoughts about Wii Fit which I picked up last week.

The included balance board is basically two separate scales that measure weight independently of each other.  If you have a thick carpet there are some extra feet that can be attached to compensate, my floors are all wood so I am not sure how carpet would change things with the board.  The board itself runs on 4 AA batteries and seems pretty solidly built.  It is also my main gripe with Wii Fit.  I wear a size 10.5 shoe and the board often feels too small for me to stand on comfortably.  It is long enough for most of the games but I thought it would have been better had it been an inch or two wider.
