Reiner Knizia's Samurai

Posted in

After reading a review I made a impulse purchase on a iPhone game called Reiner Knizia's Samurai. This is a pretty fun bear and pretzels type board game setup to run as a turn based phone game. It supports multiplayer and online play. The essentials are to compete and capture resources by placing tokens on the game board to surround said resources and effect influence for capture or tie. As with most good board games, play is simple but victory conditions are complex. You have to really watch what is getting captured rather then just pursuing your own goals. Anyway, I have been looking for something new, having burned out a bit on uniwar with a nice turnbase feel. I think it's a bit pricey at $4.99 though, so it might be worth waiting to see if get down to a more reasonable buck or so.

Anybody else looking for a game?

So DDO is still fun once a week, but I've been finding myself wishing there was something else on the horizon a few of us could agree on and play once a week or so. Possible choices are Aion, Star Trek Online, Warhammer, Conan, LOTRO, or EQ2. None are particularly appealing, and I know Phil, Doug, and Griffon all have multiple committments already, so this may not inspire any interest. I know a couple of people weren't too impressed with Lotro as a solo game, but I thought it had real potential for a regular full group once a week.

Team fortress 2, goes free this weekend

Crunch gear mentioned that TF2 is going free over the weekend and can be preloaded now. I think that means that if you get it you keep and not just that it's free to play only this weekend but the details are a bit unclear.
Fantastic team play capture the flag and conquest modes. A really top notch game but there is no single player mode.

I had a very irritating experience with my nividia 8800 dying on me. I was pretty stoked at first that BFG was going to honor the warranty on it and replace. Sadly it took a bunch of weeks for them to manage to get me a new card. What the sent me was a 9600 GT, I was kind of irked about that but digging into the numbers and testing it suggest that it is similar in performance though worse at some stuff better at others. The fan is super annoying loud, to the point of I can't ignore it so I will have to get a after market non suck wine fan. Anyway I give BFG a c+ for the whole experience but that is better then most would do with a several year old card, most would fail utterly. The end result is I now get to do non laptop gaming again woot!.

It's nice to see a run of games that I can sink my teeth into.

So for anyone who missed it there is a left 4 dead 2 demo out on steam.

Guys,

I am sorry I did not make it last night.  I am interested in playing one night a week if possible a game with whoever is interested.  I do not know if any of you have interest in any new games coming out or not, but I would be interested in doing something.  I talked to Mike and I know that he is still happy with DDO and not really interested in anything else.  I was considering trying out Champions Online at release or checking out Aion at release - I like starting fresh the best instead of trying to catch up or play content you all already have - ruins the fun for me which is why coming back to DDO does not appeal to me that much.  Please call me or respond here.  I would love to hear from you all.

Velvet Asassin

After having a grand romp with Wolverien I decided to mix it up with Velvet Asasin. I'm a huge theif fan so I had a vauge hope that this console port might have enough thought and game play behind it to be decent. Utter fail.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I spent a few quality hours with Wolverine for the PC the other night. I have not seen the movie yet so I can't comment on it's liberties but it dose succeed in making want to go see it more. I have to say, surprisingly, I'm really enjoying the game. Usually anything based on a movie is a garbage release, and while the game dose show some lack of engine polish it doesn't cut into the fun factor. Unlike the last console port I tried to play (H.A.W.X) Wolverine is quite playable with mouse and keyboard though hooking the controller up might smooth out some combo's. something to try later.

Lots of little video technical glitches, some weird refresh bugs and artifacts but nothing play stopping as of yet.
