Arcana Evolved

A Question of Freedom - Aftermath

Posted in

Thanks to everyone who took part in the finale of the Arcana Evolved campaign, A Question of Freedom. I had a great time running this game and a great group of players are at the heart of any successful role playing campaign. Below are notes on the fate of the Unity and several key NPCs, just for posterity.

I made a mistake... Evan was NOT killed with all the others, and was crowned king of New Axia at Taim's last command. His mark disappeared (burned away, along with his hand when he slew the Seeker). You now have a magical artificial hand, courtesy of Cadge and Zeke. The question is, do you want to accept the throne? Taira will not contest it, but she clearly has a vision for the combined nations of Verdune and Thartholan that is appealing. She makes it clear that she will not stand in your way, unless you start to screw things up, and she'll serve as your advisor (whether you want her to or not) to see that that doesn't happen. Your call, Mac.

Champion of Erixalimar

Champions of the dragon god Erixalimar are essentially Champions of Justice with a few changes. Such individuals are extremely rare, and enjoy a direct link to their god that no other creatures in the Diamond Throne can claim. Erixalimar is far closer to the material plane than any other such entity in a position to grant their followers power, and thus the aura and abilities of his Champions are enhanced beyond most others. No one begins life as a Champion of Erixalimar and it is essentially a Prestige Class which can only be acquired through play, and by earning an intimate bond with the Dragon God. The changes are summarized below:

AE RPG Campaign - New Axia Showdown

Posted in

We will be returning to my AE campaign next Saturday, September 13, at 4:30 pm. We will be playing every other week so long as I am available.

It has been only days since the Unity confronted Warsong at his citadel, a confrontation he clearly orchestrated. Separating the PCs from Taim, he offered an alliance against Nithogar, who he claims is a threat to destroy or enslave all non-draconic civilization in the North, including New Axia and the Diamond Throne. Amazingly, the PCs accepted, a decision which should eventually include Warsong becoming part of the Unity.

Meanwhile, an emissary from the draconic empire of Pallembor has demanded that New Axia forswear any alliance with the Diamond Throne and become a vassal, or be eradicated. The dragons which have already taken up residence appear outraged and ready to fight with their adopted allies, and new renegades come to join the cause every few days, but no one harbors any illusion that they will be nearly enough. At times, the skies are black with dragons winging West to reinforce their claim to the lands of the Diamond Throne, and draconid armies continue to march North into Serathis.

Ideas & Thoughts

This page is intended for notes, suggestions, initial thoughts and other contemplations that are not fully formed.  If you have questions or suggestions this is a good place to post them first.

Ground Rules

Where possible, I will reference the 4th edition PHB or the AE rulebook directly.  Where possible, I will lift rules whole cloth and fit AE systems into existing D&D frameworks.

Each AE class will have a new base class created with it's own class features.  I will not use D&D base classes directly, even where the classes are fairly close (i.e. Magister and Wizard.)

Where possible, I will lift powers directly from the PHB, or simply modify their special effects, but each class will have it's own list of powers.

Spell-like Powers will have Simple, Complex, and Exotic designators added, as well as a Power Source (i.e. Green, Arcane, Divine, et. al.)  These abilities will be selectable as class powers by any class that uses that source, in place of their base powers.  The restrictions on such selections will be part of the base class features.

Arcana Evolved Campaign and 4th Edition

Posted in

My AE campaign has been on hiatus for a few months now.  I have always intended to return to it when Michael MacDonald finishes running his HARP game, but the release of 4th ed. D&D has given me pause to consider.  There are a number of issues I've never cared for in D&D 3.5 (and even more so in all earlier versions), many of which are addressed by mechanics changes in 4th edition.  At a minimum, I'd be adopting the 4th ed. combat mechanics before I'd be willing to start the campaign up again.  In addition, the vast number of spells open to most casters is a real problem for the Magisters in the group.  Frankly, the character powers system in 4th ed. would address this quite nicely if we only had a good rules conversion reference.

I'm thinking of starting a WIKI to collect inputs on AE -> 4th ed. conversion rules and would like those of you who are interested to input to it.  I'll post the link here as soon as it's ready, but please feel free to post comments here as to a return to the Unity campaign, 4th ed. D&D conversion, or anything else related to AE.
