EDIT4: VSpy is much quicker than the other options tried so far and will be used for site monitoring of the server. It will only show up for users with the 'Ventrilo' role, which I've given to everyone who plays MMOs. You may hide the block in your account settings if you don't want to see it.
EDIT3: The Teamspeak server will no longer be functional as of Friday, March 27.
EDIT2: The new Ventrilo server is up. You'll need to download the latest client from the link below. Setup the server as follows:
- Name: Avatar
- Host: ventrilo4.holdouts.com
- Port: 3841
- Password: Same as what we used in the TS server. If you don't remember the old password and can't recover it from your TS client, e-mail or call me.
EDIT: This is Fait Accompli. Please download a Ventrilo client here and configure it. I'll send out the new server information as soon as it's available.
My long term contract with holdouts.com for my 20-person Teamspeak server has expired. I can either re-up, or switch over to Ventrillo. 5 years ago, Ventrillo was a terrible piece of software that lacked a Mac client, sounded awful, and which I generally wouldn't have anything to do with. These days, most people that use it claim it's better than TS and most MMO player seem to use Ventrillo over TS. So, does anyone mind if I make the transition to a Ventrillo server? There will be some level of setup required on your part, as users, if only download and config of the Vent client.

I hope it is cool if I use this sometimes to play with my cousin. I am always happy to chip in for costs and you all know I am good for it. Miss playing with you guys, but my current schedule makes it hard for me to stay up as late as I used to. The two hour time difference is the real killer for me these days.
ROFLMAO!!!
ROFLMAO!!!
I dunno lol
It is ancient feral lore. The shaman of olde adjusted the controls in darkened caves and taught their pups what settings would let them hear voices from the spirit world and not become deafened by their roar. We honour the sacrifice of our ancestors' ears by performing the ritual of configuration as it has been handed down.
So Phil, did you find a
So Phil, did you find a document on the compressor settings? The help file is um pretty pointless.
VentriloSpy
I added VentriloSpy (flash) and NanoSpy (iFrame) blocks using code from their sites. Let me know what you think. Neither block disappears when no one is logged into the server like the old TS block did. Otherwise, these are both a bit better.
NanoSpy is a bit cleaner, but is static and doesn't refresh. VentriloSpy is faster, flash based, and has a refresh button. The latter is hidden by default, while the NanoSpy is visible by default. Take your pick.
EDIT: This only shows up if you're in one of the on-line gaming groups. It' hidden otherwise. If you want to see the Ventrilo server status and can't, please let me know.
The SFX->compressor function
The SFX->compressor function is supposed to normalize everyone's volume. Here are the instructions I used for it:
- Go to Setup
- Enable Direct Sound
- Select the SFX Button
- Select Compressor and click Add.
- Under Compressor Properties use the following settings
- Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use 15)
- Attack = 0.01
- Release = Around 500
- Threshold = Around -30
- Ratio = 100
- Pre delay = 4.0
Server (User) Issues
Sorry for any issues with the server last night. I'm trying to set it up so us known folks have one password and gueast have another, so they can be changed independently. For the moment, that's not working. Newb Vent admin here. I'll get it right, eventually.
Ventrilo Drupal Module
One or more of the items in this module should do what we want. I'll install it later today or tomorrow.

Ventrilo Setup
Once the app is installed, you'll need to setup a user and a server.
Setting Up a User
Start the app. Click the '->' button next to User Name and then click the 'New' button. Enter your first name in the Name text box (or some variation if your first name is already taken) and click 'Ok'. Enter a phonetic spelling in the Phonetic text box (i.e. I'm using "Maikul") and click the 'Play' button to test how it sounds. Enter a description of yourself (i.e. "Michael Jones (Szaijan), Server Owner") in the Description text box and click 'Ok'.
Setting Up a Server
Start the app. Click the '->' button next to Server and then click the 'New' button. Enter 'Avatar' in the Name text box and click 'Ok'. Enter "ventrilo4.holdouts.com" in the Hostname or IP text box. Enter "3841" in the Port text box, enter the standard Avatars voice server password in the Password text box, and enter "General" in the Default Channel text box. Make sure all the check boxes are checked and click 'Ok'.
Test to make sure you can connect to the new server by clicking 'Connect'.
Setting Up your Headset
Better instructions to follow, but it's different for everyone, so you'll likely need to experiment. My current settings include:
Checked Enable outgoing voice communications
Unchecked Use Push to Talk Hotkey
Checked Play Key Clicks
Silence Time 1.0 seconds
Sensitivity 10 (need to experiment with this)
Checked Use Direct Sound
Selected Headset under Output Device
Checked Use Direct Sound
Selected Headset under Input Device
Left everything else at the defaults.
Cool. Vent works pretty good
Cool. Vent works pretty good these days, based on my AoC experience with TSG. It takes a hell of lot more configuring since you often have to configure how each other individual sounds to you, but with so few folks using it, you'll barely notice. I'll make sure I have it set-up for the occasional chance to pop in and say howdy. Or in case we ever get into the same game & server again.
That said, have I mentioned that turtle convinced me to pick up WoW again? We're playing on Cenarion Circle with House of Rooke, most of whom are RL friends. It was the guild I helped found before I switched over to Silverhand to play with you guys. Now it's about 60-70 people strong.

Fine with me, honestly I'm
Fine with me, honestly I'm thinking we might be able to allmove to the new google voice stuff :) but vent is fine too. Ts has been stuck at rc2 for a couple years so I don't think any active development is hapening. That is a turn off to me.
Update
OK, Vent is cheaper. Already made the change. I'll post the new server info here when it's ready. The password will remain the same as it was on the TS server. For now, the TS server is still up, to the best of my knowledge.
