Runes of Magic is a free to play (F2P) MMO in the mold of WoW, but with best of breed elements from EQ2, FFXI, Guild Wars, and several others. Graphics have a decidedly anime bent, but are otherwise a less polished version of what you see in WoW (i.e. no bump mapping, even fewer polygons for the environment, less dynamic lighting, et. al.) Combat and MOB behavior is decidedly similar to WoW. The class and skill system utilizes a dual classing system that allows one to gain benefits from and switch between two classes during a game session, so a single character is not locked into just one role in a group.
Housing, crafting, quest log, and map tools are all first rate. Character customization of looks is decent. Instances are less impressive than those in WoW, at least at low level, but the gameplay is just as good and the solo questing may even be superior. Random abilities on loot drops, runes that can be used to customize abilities, and the Arcane Transmuter that allows even deeper item customization are fairly unique and a strong part of the game.
Currently, several of the Avatars are playing on Artemis server under the guild name Lastwatch. Play times are generally 9 pm or later, PST.
