Fallout 3 - at long last

Posted in

So far, I can only complain about 3 things:

1) there is a level cap of 20 (not there yet, but give me a full weekend with it)
2) no Trait at character creation
3) Tag skills don't get the 2-for-1 increase when leveling up

Really, though, it's wonderful. It's a revision of the engine Oblivion was built on, but it really has the Fallout feel. The first "bad thing" I encountered was a Radroach, then mostly humans, until I saw a Molerat (very classic), and Supermutants (which really look pretty cool). I was surprised when I was attacked by a security robot, wearing classis U.S. army markings (white star and numbering on an OD Green paint job).

Some of the beat up old homes could have a more realistic layout, but the rows of beat-down, burned, once-identical houses is pretty impressive in places where part of a subdivision semi-survived. Encumbrance is a issue you have to deal with constantly, which is pretty true to previous Fallout games. There are companion characters, but the only one I've met won't join me because my Karma score is too high (oh, you can view your Karmic title, but not your actual Karma number).

It isn't all I could have hoped for in a new Fallout game, but it is (thus far) a more than sufficient Fallout game. The M rating is really about language and drug use, and I suppose the violence as well. Unlike previous Fallout games there are no adjustable settings for gore or language.

I'm having so much fun with this that I'm thinking of making a melee wast land canibal lady killer evil bastard just to see how it plays differently. My goody two shoes character just hit 14th and I'm runnind dad down to his lab. Wish I found the pet dog sooner. He can mess up stealth but is incrediable tuff.

The Ladykiller perk is

The Ladykiller perk is awesome, especially at lower levels when you're skills aren't that great. Good in combat, good in dialogue. My knowledge of the command console, from trying to mod Oblivion and working around some glitches, allowed me to simulate on one character the Gifted Trait at 1st level.

You beat me to the bunch I

You beat me to the bunch I was meaning to post about this today but I have been busy playing instead. Much like a Oblivion there is a lot to like, and hopefully it won't suffer from to much side quest complexity overload (between getting kicked out of the wizards guild and being a vampire I got beat down by oblivion after awhile).

So far Fallout3 is definitely tickling me the right way. I especially like the HDR effects for that visual pop of absurd contrast. Lots of interesting extra dialog tree's based on skill sets is also cool.
