Ca'Lil was originally an owl until Alaron transformed him into an Air Elemental. He still looks like an owl, mostly white with tinges of blue along his feathers. Occasionally a careful observer will note that under some conditions that Ca'Lil appears to be translucent.
Here is some correspondence about the transformation:
Alaron is concerned about his owl familiar Ca'lil. Owls typically live 5-20 years, and up to 10 years longer in captivity (the longest claimed wild lifespan was 34 years). So even assuming Ca'lil is well taken care of and might have some minor magic aid, his lifespan is dramatically shorter than an elf. You may have more accurate notes about when Alaron started adventuring vs. when it is now, but I'd estimate he has been with Alaron for a minimum of 5, and more likely 10 games years (x2 for longer years). Ca'lil could already be fairly old for an owl.
When I read the Elemental Familiar spell, I figured this would be something that Alaron would be very interested in. Changing Ca'lil into an air elemental would give him virtual immortality while still allowing him the pleasures of the air. It almost goes without saying that Alaron would never do this without Ca'lils full and informed consent. Having been in rapport with Ca'lil for so long, Alaron knows the pleasures of an owl and realizes that some of those will be sacrificed if we go down this path.
The translation of the stats is interesting - we probably keep the same cognitive stats (int, wis, cha). The Dex and Con is artificially degraded (when they created the ""tiny"" air elemental), so perhaps a fairer method might be an average of before and after (assuming some parts of those traits are innate). Of course Hit-points and base attacks will be handled as a familiar. We should probably keep Ca'lil's current skill levels too (he has had a lot of years to work on those Spot roles :-)
So if Ca'lil agrees to this procedure, Alaron is willing to expend a great deal of effort to locate this spell. The spells above are nice to have, and worth researching, but this spell is something he would be willing to quest for.
Bear responded: I like the idea of working to protect your familiar and continue the relationship, now long established between the two of you. Though Dertel does not currently have a familar (you sense a sad story there) she eagerly helps you to locate the spell. It will take several weeks of work to learn the spell and prepare for its casting, but ultimately you will be able to do it. I would agree, keep the current mental stat (int, Wis, Cha), I don't think his Dex should drop, he seems to getting more manuverable (fly 100 ft, perfect), but it makes sense that his new types CON would affect him somewhat so average the new and old Cons.
Keep his current skills, but add any new ones from the new type. It says he keeps the same basic form. I think his transformation would effct his appearance. He still looks like an owl, but now appears mostly white with tinges of blue along his feathers. He might be generally taken for a snowy owl, though I think in some light he probably looks translucent.
Ca'Lil will agree to the transformation, He is deeply touched by your loyalty to him.
