In the wake of the disappointment that was Gratuitous Space Battles Armada 2526 came floating across my system today. It's a 4x space strategy game based on one of the same name from 1991. I had never heard of the 1991 original but the new version looks pretty cool from the descriptions and videos. According to avault and ebgames it actually released today; I went to look on impulse as they are a listed distributor but it doesn't seem to be available there yet. No luck finding a demo either. Ebgames has it listed for $39.99 which is more than I want to throw down on an unknown but I plan to keep an eye on the digital distribution channels for it to hit around 20 bucks or for a favorable review to come up someplace.

Armada
This game did not end up on Impulse and has to be bought or downloaded from Matrix Games for $50 or $40 respectively. No demo. Based purely on the quality of GalCiv 2 and the fact that this appears to be something of a clone, I'd say get and play GalCiv 2 until you're bored, then find out what people are saying about this game. This game seems right up my alley, but I don't see what differentiates it from GalCiv 2 at this point, and I won't spend $40+ on it without playing a demo. I'm really curious why it didn't go to Impulse. Could have been that they didn't want to pay the overhead, or it might be that they feared uncontrolled user reviews.

I played a bit of the tutorial but it didn't grab me the way sins did. The art and animations seemed pretty low res/flat to me. It certainly did not grab me the way sins did. I have not given in much time though.

Sins became too jumbled to control in a large game, IMO. I liked the idea of it, but would have preferred it as a turn based game.
There's a demo
I just tried out a little bit of the demo. I have only played around with the initial tutorials so far but it seems fun. I am strongly reminded of Sins of a Solar Empire which I enjoyed. I tend to prefer turn based games to RTS type games but my initial impression is that this one might have a good pace to it. I'll probably play around with the demo a bit more tomorrow but looks like it might be a buy to me.
