Michael Jones' 4th Edition D&D Campaign, to begin in late Dec 2008. A canonical D&D world like that hinted at in the PHB, making use of some of the Forgotten Realms material, but leaving most of the world sketchy as the PCs adventure with little awareness of it beyond the few fractured societies from which they originate.

The world is very sparsely populated, creating the "points of light" society described in the PHB, with each city or town essentially besieged by a hostile world. Travel is difficult and dangerous. Most artifacts of more developed and interlocked societies are ruins or relics of an age long past. The world is raw, untamed, and has sprung up among the ruins of a much more glorious past. Large cities are known by reputation only and that reputation is likely exaggerated. Monsters and wild creatures abound in the the wilderness between settlements, and roads are often hard to make out, where they exist at all.

Expect this campaign to be combat and exploration heavy, with social engagements likely to be intimate and of a personal scope. Problems will at least start locally and concerns of the world beyond the immediate vicinity will usually take a back seat.

Gamemaster: Michael Jones

Play Times: Bi-Weekly Saturdays, 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm PT

Requirements: Must have basic familiarity with the new 4th Ed. D&D Players Handbook rules and in depth knowledge of the rules and abilities pertaining to your chosen class and race. Books can be borrowed from myself, Griffon, the McKays, or Mel, if you don't have them yourself. Only the PHB is needed, unless you select a race or class from the Forgotten Realms Players Guide (FRPG) or from the Dragon webzine, in which case you should be familiar with the pertinent rules and be able to obtain reference copies.

The only book the players need to own is the Players Handbook. Rules from FRPG or the Dragon can be printed from my PDF versions (Dragon and Dungeon) or copied from by book.

Purpose: We'll play this game at least through the H3 module. By the end of that time everyone should have a good idea of whether they prefer the 4th Edition D&D rules, or the 3.5 rules from AE. If people (especially myself) end up liking 3.5 rules better, I will likely move to running a new game using the Pathfinder RPG, which is very much a variant and an improvement on 3.5. If we all like 4th edition, I'll keep running Darkwylde for however long we're all having a good time with it.
